Climate change and depletion of resources are driving a transformation from fossil fuels to renewable energy. This shift provides an opportunity to create multi-functional energy landscapes by reconfiguring local and regional resource flows and corresponding waste management systems. To this end, I introduce an energy landscape design methodology by introducing two frameworks, “Urban Metabolism” and “Restorative Design.” This method is based on circulating metabolic flows with multiple social and ecological benefits. This article will then discuss a contemporary design project to illustrate how the design of future energy landscapes needs to be conducted between local and regional scales, between the provision of near-term and long-term solutions, between the manipulation of resource flows and their associated physical landscapes, Conversion between ecological needs.
