It is well-known that due to the disease of Penaeus monodon in Taiwan, the shrimp industry in Japan was greatly damaged and was forced to shift to small-scale production. This is an important reason for the soaring price of Japanese shrimp since spring 1988. This time we have the opportunity to go to Taiwan in order to investigate the live prawn disease situation and to understand the status of live prawn in Taiwan that has threatened Japan’s prawn market since 1987. The survey dates from August 8 to August 15, 1988. The survey area is the Penaeus monodon culture area centered around Donggang in Pingtung County; the shrimp processing plant in Pingtung and Kaohsiung; the aquatic product testing laboratories in Donggang and Keelung; and the shrimp farming area of Yi-blue. The survey report is as follows: Taiwan’s modern culture of Penaeus monodon was started by Dr. Liao Yikuu under the guidance of Ph.D. Dr. Yoo Won-will and after the first successful artificial propagation of Penaeus monodon in 1969 in the world. Since then, the company has been developing continuously. By 1983, the output had exceeded 10,000 tons, reaching more than 80,000 tons in 1987.
