Background This study will explore the reasons why Australian parents of children are willing to consult their GP to determine the factors that influence their decision-making. Methods The semi-structured questionnaire was used to interview 22 parents waiting in eight general practice clinics. Recordings during the meeting, information identification, transcripts and thematic analysis. Results The five themes that led to the cause of the problem were: the program; the experience of individuals and others; resources and convenience; the right choices; and the confidence and guidance in management. Discussion Several reasons for seeking medical advice reported by parents of their parents are often the combination of several factors that affect their choices and are consistent with findings from other countries. Knowledge and understanding of this decision-making process is conducive to improving primary health care services for Australian patients and also provides information for the training of medical students and general practitioners.
