In degraded pastures, plant roots are the major source of carbon in the soil, and carbon is an essential material to improve soil fertility. The mini-rhizotron, a transparent plexiglass tube, was inserted into the soil to track the growth dynamics in three growing seasons of Artemisia halodendron and Caragana microphylla roots. During the observation period, the study plots were shielded to prevent grazing. The number of dry roots in 1989 was less than the more humid ones in 1990 and 1991. The root growth dynamics of the two plants were similar in three years. Root growth dynamics correlate well with soil moisture.
