Symbolism and Imagism are the two poetic revolutions that greatly influenced Europe and the United States from the 19th century to the 20th century. Symbolism poetry is regarded as the origin of modern western literature. Imagism is praised as “a revolution in English literature”. Because the two factions have close historical ties with some of the same poetic assertions, they are often confused by people. This article attempts to analyze the difference and connection between the two, from the philosophical basis and poetic characteristics, taking the symbolism representative Eliot and the imaginative representative Williams as examples.
