The pulse line ion accelerator(PLIA)concept was motivated by the desire for an inexpensive way to accelerate intense short pulse heavy ion beams to regimes of interest for studies of high energy density physics(HEDP)and warm dense matter(WDM)[1]. Compared to other types of accelerators, the major attraction of this concept is the very low development and capital cost it promises. It is also available to provide axial focusing and/or axial confinement of the ion bunch.
