Instead of repeating the same old production-sales path of the Giants of the industrial age, modern successful enterprises focus instead on the perception and reaction to the rapidly changing consumer needs. Information technology has greatly facilitated this dramatic shift by significantly reducing the time and space constraints on access to information, resolution and response. To survive in this perceived and rapidly reacting world, big companies need to implement a new strategy that Stephen H. Hooker and Richard L. Nolan call a new strategy for networked management. In aviation, networked flight refers to the use of computer systems to enhance pilots' ability to receive and respond to rapidly changing environmental information. Pilots network flight, which means that they are in the information of the flight. Similarly, network management is to give the company the ability to manage the operation of information technology. For a company to be networked, it must invest in overall IT capabilities rather than isolated IT systems. Indeed, holistic corporate actions require more than just large applications and network connections, but are governed by a holistic messaging model that embodies the company's goals and “how we work here” in software. More importantly, the overall model should also include “How do we change the way we operate?” Mrs. Fieldsz, Brooklyn Coalition, and the financial services organizations that the author calls global insurers, whose real names have been hidden, are all networked to varying degrees. Mrs. Fields's cookie company implemented a hardware automation program; Global Insurance implemented a fully-modeled network of corporate strategy.
