It has been reported that a prospective, double-blind, randomized study of cefazolin-prophylaxis in elective vascular surgery demonstrated that cefazolin did prevent infections caused by cefazolin-sensitive pathogens. Thirteen of the 237 placebo-treated placebo-type infections occurred, while none of the 225 patients who took cefazolin took an infection. This study compared the additional medical costs of prescribing 5 grams of cefazolin to preventable wound infections in place-holders (ie infections caused by cefazolin-sensitive pathogens) (per 100 patients Surgery required 2,500 US dollars) for comparison. The total medical costs for these patients were determined. Except for patients who underwent second elective surgery or non-surgical problems that prolong the length of hospital stay. Among patients with preventable wound infection, the median cost of medical treatment was significantly higher than that of other patients (P <0.01), 86 patients (including the abdominal aorta) undergoing surgery, and 7 patients
