在中国古代,民间演戏的首要目的是为满足俗民的种种信仰需求,然而戏曲本质上是一种表演艺术,为了“达到”上述目的,艺人借助了不同的方式,演出时大量运用口彩语便是其常用的重要方式之一。戏曲舞台上口彩语的运用场合,主要有开场的请神仪式、破台仪式、例戏、吉庆剧演出,以及结束时的扫台仪式等,另在正戏演出时也偶有。由于戏曲的表演性特征,故舞台上口彩语的使用方式主要是送口彩,艺人或通过唱词唱出来,或通过说白道出来。
