The Lockyer Valley is the main pumpkin producing area in southeastern Queensland. In 1958, for the first time, bacterial plaque disease caused by Xanthomonas cucurbitae was recorded in the area without drawing any attention. Since then the incidence has been increasing. The disease has now become a plant epidemic that affects production. As the peasants in this area are accustomed to choosing seeds according to their agronomic characteristics, they rarely consider whether the seeds have been infected with the plague and thus cause the epidemic. This paper reports the results of two field trials of seeds treated with hot water, hydrochloric acid and NaOCl to control bacterial spot rot caused by X.anthomonascucurbltae. Materials and methods [Source of seeds]: Seeds are selected from healthy fruits and severely infected fruits, and the seeds are mixed thoroughly in plastic containers to carry the seeds. All seeds are air-dried for use.
