传统文化精神是观察传统农民主体性的重要视角。内倾主导的文化在个人身上现实表现为压抑自己、剥夺自己、虐待自己,生成清静无为、安于现状、忍辱负重、唯唯诺诺等国民性格。在生活在传统文化之根的乡土社会中的农民身上这一点表现得尤其明显。法儒两家的整体主义因历代统治者一定程度的儒表法里并依托于各种宗法共同体影响深远。且配以君主专制式的自上而下的强大权威时,压抑了个人的欲望和需要,独立人格无法形成,自我无法生长,人们丧失自主性而不自知。崇古意识形成保守拒变、因循守旧、墨守成规的人格,创新被视为异途、异端;皇权心态使主体的思考、判断和行动权让渡给他者,主体异化为客体,这些被当作主体的他者被众多的无主体性的“主体”烘托成一个具有压迫力量的巨大客体,每个成员个体在它的面前都是微不足道的。内倾主义、整体主义、崇古主义和皇权主义使传统农民清静无为、丧失自我、墨守成规、奴性依附。传统农民主体性与自主、自立、自由的现代主体性比较而言相距甚远。
