Hitachi Cable Co., Ltd. obtained a 30 billion yen (US$240 million) submarine cable contract from AT&T. Hitachi will provide a new optical cable with a transmission capacity of up to 120,000 voice channels (64kb/s per voice channel). AT&T plans to use it to connect Japan, the United States, Hawaii, and Guam to its $1.2 billion TPC-5 submarine network. AT&T invested 402 million U.S. dollars, accounting for 35% of the system. There are 46 telecommunications companies in 34 countries participating in the system. AT&T and KDD (Japan’s No. 1 International Telephone Company) jointly developed two phases of the project.
