The Infrared Finder is a sensitive, versatile infrared detection system that can be assembled in less than an hour once the required components are available. A variety of detectors are available for use in this device, which has many uses both experimentally and practically. The heart of the infrared searcher is a simple 2-tube-oscillator whose frequency varies with the infrared sensitive photoconductive element or thermistor. The infrared light falls on the detector to change its resistance, which changes the output frequency of the oscillator. Normally, the output is a low-frequency buzzer, which is heard when the unit is pointing at an infrared source. For convenience, the infrared searcher mock-up is housed in a small plastic flash box and utilizes the original parabolic reflector.
