吕碧城,1883年出生于山西太原。其父吕凤岐,曾任山西学政等职。1903年,吕碧城被聘为《大公报》见习编辑,开始撰写文章倡导女权和女性解放。仅数月,她所发表的格律严谨、文采斐然的诗词就颇受前辈们的赞许。1904-1908年做《大公报》主笔期间,吕碧城借助这一舆论阵地,积极为她的兴女权、倡导妇女解放等主张发表了大量诗文,还发表了多篇言论,宣扬兴办女学的必要性和重要性。她把兴办女学提到关系国家兴亡的高度,以此冲击积淀千年的“女子无才便是德”
