荒诞派作品兼备悲剧性与喜剧性。《动物园的故事》作为一部喜剧作品,审美主体会处在不同的位置和角度审视它,审美体验也随之不同。以审美客体为参照物,按照审美主体的移位,以《动物园的故事》为例,可以将喜剧审美主客体之间复杂的关系分为三种,即否定性审美(主体带着猎奇与戏弄的审美心理审视客体,称之为“向下看”),平等性审美(主体带着理解与认同的审美心理审视客体,称之为“平行看”),和肯定性审美(主体带着惊异与认可的审美心理审视客体,称之为“向上看”)。
