Indonesia suffered an economic crisis in 1997. The crisis forced the Indonesian government to turn to the International Monetary Fund and implement economic recovery and reform plans including trade. This article focuses on the Indonesian trade policy after the economic crisis. This article examines the trend of Indonesia’s trade policy towards protectionism and discusses issues related to its competitiveness. This article also discusses Indonesia’s position in the World Trade Organization and Doha round negotiations, and analyzes its participation in free trade agreements (FTAs) (in recent years, the increasing free trade agreements in the Asia-Pacific region) and its policies in this regard. The article concludes that free trade agreements (FTAs) have become a component of Indonesia’s international economic diplomacy. However, Indonesia will only negotiate with free trade agreements with several major trading partner countries, and its policy goal is to conclude high quality agreements.
