通过张天翼的小说《包氏父子》中的老包形象可以看出中国的“老包们”渴望其后代通过“学而优则仕”的道路，实现其“望子成龙”、光宗耀祖目标的心态。这种古老的民族文化心态，在我国从古至今的大量文学作品中也有充分的反映，它是我国文学的一个主题原型，在人物形象的画廊中老包似的人物大有人在。它是一种渗透血液的遗传，一种深入骨髓的感悟，只有深刻研讨他们的命运并对其深入挖掘，才有可能对这种古老的民族文化心态作出合理的解释。
