从1988年玉米纸袋育苗定向密植技术大面积推广应用以后,育苗方式向多样化发展,育苗器不断变化。通过对比试验,发现只要能带土移栽,在适当苗龄的情况下,不同育苗器间产量相差不大。 1987年,祥云最初使用的是一张大报纸做24个无底袋,即高9厘米,直径6厘米的育苗器,最高亩产949公斤;1988年以后用一张大报纸做48个无底袋,纸袋缩小为高6厘米,直径4厘米,最高亩产1044.8公斤;1990年推广机制营养钵,这种钵高4厘米,底部直径4厘米,顶部直径3厘米,有播种眼,眼底至钵底仅2厘米。与同样营养土的纸袋比较秧苗素质差异不大。机制钵育苗移栽单产787.2公斤,纸袋单产777.7公斤,产量也相似。
