Argon Networks is the third service vendor to combine IP and ATM in a high-performance carrier-class switch. Argon’s new GigaPacket Node Switch combines ATM switching with high-performance IP packet routing over SONET (Synchronous Optical Network). The switch uses the emerging MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) standard to provide the ATM quality of service for IP networking and automates virtual private networking for service providers. The GigaPacket Node’s support of IP packets over SONET also eliminates the need to duplicate IP and ATM networks because it does not require separate WAN devices to manage IP and ATM traffic separately while integrating the SONET core network. Users can also quickly configure the device’s channelized SONET line card for each type of operation. The GigaPacket Node has an aggregate switching capacity of 160G bps, allowing telcos and service providers to establish multiple VPN (virtual private network) services using ATM virtual wires. The switch will be able to route up to 500 million packets per second and will be configured to support up to 3072 DS3 connections, 1024 OC-3 links, 256 OC-12 or 64 OC-48 links. it
