It has been reported in the past that serum total galactotransferase (GT) activity is elevated in cancer patients, but this increase is both inconsistent and non-specific. It has been reported that an isoenzyme of serum GT has a specific association with tumor cells, but this finding has not been further confirmed due to technical difficulties in electrophoresis. The authors took fresh serum for analysis on an isoelectric focusing column containing ampholytes (pH 4-6) to study the isoelectric focusing of serum GT activity in normal people, non-cancerous liver disease patients, and liver cancer patients. It was found that the serum GT activity in four healthy individuals produced three peaks in isoelectric focusing, with isoelectric points at pH 4.8, 4.95
