According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Advisory Group on the Prevention of Blindness in 1987, there are estimated to be about 27 to 35 million blind people worldwide, and at least an equal number of low-vision patients [1]. A sample survey of Chinese disabled persons in 1987 showed that the prevalence of visual disability in China was 1.008%, that is, about 11 million visually impaired patients [2]. Rehabilitation of visual disabilities in foreign countries has attracted the attention and interest of experts for more than 60 years.
