延川秧歌起源显然与古代祭祀、戌边军旅庆功形式和农民欢庆丰收时的手舞足蹈有关,是古代田园民歌的变式。劳动人民在稼樯小憩时,眼看着禾苗茁壮成长而油然生情,于是载歌载舞,祈求丰收。正月天,阳气上升,大地回春,人们就把这种活动叫作做横歌或秧歌。延川大秧歌又称二人场子、四人场子、八八场子、十六场子、三十二人场子等场子秧歌。延川大秧歌一般都有伞头,伞头起领唱和领舞的作用,而跟着伞头走的其他演员,主要是尽情地扭,谁扭的动作幅度大,体态灵活,谁就能博得满堂喝彩。
