Designing a high-voltage switching power supply capable of generating continuous arcing can be challenging. This compact, highly efficient switching power supply delivers 1kV at 20W and withstands continuous arcs (shorts) (Figure 1). It uses standard commercially available components. Use R_1 to set the switching regulator controller LTC1871 to 120kHz nominal operating frequency. The circuit works like a flyback flyback circuit, producing 333V on C_1. The diode / capacitor charge pump multiplier puts this
