科学计量学中利用单一关系进行研究领域分析只反映了对研究领域的局部认识。将研究领域中各种元素之间基于科学文献构建起的不同关系进行融合可以更好的展示研究领域的结构。当前对多关系的研究有两种趋向,一是关系组合应用,其实质仍是单一关系在研究领域分析中的应用;另一种是将不同的关系根据一定的计算方式整合为一种新的关系,用来描述研究领域结构,即关系融合。目前,对关系融合的研究主要集中在信息检索领域,且限于将链接结构和文本结构结合起来提高检索效率,将关系融合用于描绘研究领域结构的研究还很有限,已有的研究采用将词间关系和基于引用的同被引/文献耦合关系两种关系融合的方法,将三种或三种以上关系进行融合的研究很少;从融合算法来看,主要是采用线性融合方法。
