Acid rain, known as “paradise tears” or “death of the air”, has a great destructive power. Acid rain raises the acidity of the soil, causing dead crops and forage; it destroys forest ecosystems; it acidifies rivers and lakes and causes large numbers of microbes and micro-organism-eating fish and shrimp to die, making them “dead rivers,” “ ”It seeps into the ground, causing groundwater to be unavailable for long periods of time. According to statistics, 1 million hectares of forests in central Europe have been wilted due to acid rain. Nearly 10,000 lakes in Canada and the United States of America are all acidified and become “dead lakes.” In addition, acid rain is the culprit that caused serious corrosion such as bridges, buildings, ships, vehicles, transmission lines, railway tracks, mechanical and electrical equipment. According to experts, acid rain aggravated the relics weathered in ancient Greece and Rome. In the eastern United States, some 3,500 historic buildings and 10,000 monuments were damaged by acid rain.
