庄子,名周,战国时宋之蒙人。从他渊博的知识和与他交往的友人(如魏相惠施等)可推知,他大约出身于没落贵族阶级。庄子曾为“漆园吏”,但为时不长,便隐退乡里从事著述和讲学。他生活十分贫寒,曾“往贷粟于监河候”,(《外物》)也曾“衣大布而补之,正系履而过魏王。”(《山木》)住在穷巷,靠打草鞋度日,饿得面黄饥瘦。这种阶级地位的变化,就给我们提出了一个有探讨价值的问题:庄子是像某些论者所言顽固地坚守旧贵族的立场,为奴隶制的沉没唱挽歌,还是自觉或非自觉地向下层人民靠
