It would be foolish to think of Asian cinema as a structured whole. The two largest film producers in Asia, Japan and India, are culturally, economically and geographically independent. Films in Asian countries have something in common only on certain fundamental aspects - such as laughing at someone slipping on a banana peel or shedding tears when their child has lost their mother.
