关于我们习惯上提到的"金木水火土"五行顺位由来的解释,清人俞樾提出了依附帝王学的"相生倒误说"。然而经过研究发现,这种顺位表述的产生与成型的阴阳五行理论间存在着明显的时间差。另外,董仲舒的《春秋繁露》一方面最早为五行定序,即"木-火-土-金-水"另一方面却同时提出"金—木—水—火—土"的顺位。这一矛盾或可佐证通行的五行顺位与以帝王学为首的五行理论的分离关系。从语言学的角度分析。五行元素脱离理论概念而从汉语成词规律出发。可被分为"水火""金木两个双音节词,及"土"这个单音节词。通过追溯原始五行思想的发源时期元素含义,或许可以给"金—木—水—火—土"这一顺位带来一个合理的解释。
