司徒乔(1902-1958)于1940年8月在新加坡创作了脍炙人口的《放下你的鞭子》。本文根据当地华文报章有关新中国剧团义演筹赈的报道、对比冯伊湄与沈剡的回忆文字、叙述徐悲鸿《放下你的鞭子》实乃王莹的肖像画,从而尝试厘清司徒乔在创作《放下你的鞭子》的过程中,王莹不愿意再到画室来的原由。作者也提出了这幅画的创作日期,并引用骚人墨客的吟咏说明此画的艺术价值与魅力。在新中国剧团千里南来义演筹赈与侨民炽热的爱国情怀的氛围下,司徒乔染翰作画,记录了特定历史场景里的精彩剧情。司徒乔《放下你的鞭子》见证了新加坡历史的瞬间,在新加坡战前华人美术史里是绝无仅有的,也是其它画作所无法取代的。
Stuart Joe (1902-1958) created the popular “Put Your Whip Down” in Singapore in August 1940. This article, based on the reports of local Chinese-language newspapers about the relief work of the New China Theater Company, compares the recollections of Feng Yi-mei with Shen Kui and narrates Xu Beihong’s portrait of Wang Ying as “letting go of your whip” Your whip “process, Wang Ying do not want to come to the studio again. The author also proposed the date of creation of the painting, and quoted the chant of the poetic artist to illustrate the artistic value and charm of the painting. Under the auspices of the new Chinese troupe Trinidad and Tobago and the blazing patriotic sentiments of expatriates, Stuart joins Hannah to paint and document the wonderful drama in a particular historical scene. Stuart Jo’s ”Letting Down Your Whip" witnessed the moment of Singapore’s history as unique to Singapore’s pre-war Chinese art history as irreplaceable by other paintings.
