Hemorrhagic fever with nephrotic syndrome (HFRS) continues to be a serious threat to human health. The authors report on the antigenic and genetic relationships between certain HFRS and related viruses. In the past, genomic analysis of the Hantaan virus (HTN) was consistent with morphological observations and found that the HTN virus was closest to the virus in the Bunyaviridae family and met all the essential classification criteria for this family of viruses. However, there is no readily identifiable serological relationship between HTN and certain viruses in the Bunyaviridae and their respective genetic and epidemiological characteristics, which is detrimental to the classification of genera.
