Researchers at the University of Waterloo and the Sunnybrook Institute have developed a new technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to aid early detection of melanoma skin cancer. The technology uses machine learning software to analyze images of skin lesions and provide physicians with objective data indicating biomarkers of melanoma. The artificial intelligence system, which uses thousands of skin images and their corresponding melanin and hemoglobin levels to train, can reduce unnecessary biopsies and save on medical costs. It provides physicians with objective information about the characteristics of the lesion before the doctor takes more invasive treatment to help them rule out melanoma.
