Hyperplasia of mammary glands often oc-cuffs in middle-aged women(30-45 years old).The main pathogenetic factor was depression ofLiver Energy which resulted in disturbances of the Stomach,Kidney,vital Energy and Blood.According to differentiation of symptoms andsigns by traditional Chinese medicine,the diseasewas divided into 4 types:depression of LiverEnergy,Fire syndrome of Liver,deficiency ofLiver and Kidney Yin,and deficiency ofboth vital Energy and Blood,with depression ofLiver Energy as the most common type.Theaction of acupuncture was to relax Liver Energythereby regulating vital Energy and smoothingthe Energy of the Stomach coUateral.Acupunc-ture produced good immediate and long-termcurative results with little side effects comparedwith other therapies.The mechanism was pro-bably related to the improvement of cellular im-munological function and the correction of en-docrinological disturbances.The treatment ofmammary gland hyperplasia with acupuncturemay prove an important means for reducing theincidence of breast carcinoma.
