Galanin is a bioactive brain gut peptide that was first isolated and extracted in the small intestine. Recent immunohistochemical studies have shown that galanin is present in several mammalian CNS and intestinal nerves. Immunofluorescence was used to confirm the presence of galanin in the internal pancreas of dogs. Nerve fibers containing galanin are found mainly around islet cells. It has been reported that galanin inhibits insulin secretion both in vitro and in vivo and results in hyperglycemia in laboratory animals and humans. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of galanin on insulin, glucagon and somatostatin (SS) production in free and perfused rat islets.
