Insulin dependent diabetes and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus are caused by dysfunction of pancreatic β cells. Glucose transporter-2 (GLUT-2) levels in beta cells, glucokinase levels and their ratio to hexokinase play a key role in glucose-stimulated insulin release. The use of cellular engineering and transgenic techniques to establish specific cell lines can have or near normal pancreatic β-cell function. It can be inferred that the era of transplanting these genetically engineered cells into the body for the treatment of diabetes will come.
