全球正面临着资源约束趋紧、环境污染严重、生态系统退化的严峻形势,“生态文明”建设也因此成为世界性课题。在美国加州克莱蒙等几座小城就聚集着一批“生态文明”的倡议者和实践者。他们不仅亲自实践低耗能的生活方式,还倡导生态建筑、后现代农业,提倡建设绿色城市和打造生态经济。打造绿色GDP克莱蒙地处洛杉矶市区以东30英里的圣加布里埃尔山脉脚下,百年前还是寸草难生的沙漠,如今这座不到3万人的小城却拥有2万多棵树,被美国有线电视新闻网评为全美宜居城市第五名。城市核心区有7所高校,因而得名“博士和树的城市”。克莱蒙市长纳斯阿里说:
