The variolitic basaltic andesite in the Dabie Mountains occurs south of the boundary of the Susong high-pressure metamorphic belt and the South Dabie ultra-high-pressure metamorphic belt. The variolitic structure indicates an eruption beneath water. The variole contains primary, radiate plagioclase and minor pyroxene, hornblende and altered quartz. The matrix consists of glass, chlorite, epidote and zoisite. The major composition is SiO2=56.8%, TiO2=0.9%, MgO=6.4% and Fe2O3(total)=7.1%. Mg values are relatively high, ranging from 64.2 to 66.2. The variolitic andesite is believed to erupt beneath water before the continental collision between the North China Block and Yangtze Block.
