Jonathan Carrer, a professor of literature at Cornell University, has successively held academic positions such as President of the Society for Comparative Literature (1999-2001) and President of the American Symbol Society (1987-1988) Today Poetics “,” American Journal of Semiology “and other academic periodical editorial board. Professor Kaller has made outstanding achievements in many fields of research, such as semiotics, structuralism, deconstruction, cultural studies and comparative literature. He is the author of ”Introduction to Literary Theory“ (1997), ”Structuralist Poetics“ (1975), ” On Deconstruction "(1982) and so on. From the perspective of linguistics, he explored the modes and methods of literary studies by means of linguistic research methods and paradigms, which effectively promoted the development of literary studies. During the 2011-2012 visit to Cornell University, the author was commissioned by Foreign Literature Research and conducted an exclusive interview with Professor Carle. Karl expressed his views on the current hot issues at home and abroad (such as the relationship between structuralism and deconstruction, the opposition and adjustment of cultural studies and literary studies, the re-definition of classical culture and popular culture, and the classics, etc.). Caller believes that there is no fundamental contradiction between structuralism and deconstruction, and that literary studies and cultural studies are not irreconcilable. They can coexist harmoniously. Popular is not the same as classic. The so-called classic should stand the test of time. He also put forward his fair proposal to the academic development of Chinese scholars, believing that Chinese scholars should be rooted in their own local culture and make their own unique contributions in the dialogue between China and the West.
