敬老是中华民族传统美德,从汉文帝开始,敬老尊老遂成为一种时尚,并渐渐演化成为一种制度,一项国策。朝廷不但每年都要举行敬老活动,给年龄在七十岁以上的老人颁发几杖、赐鸠杖以示敬老。到了东汉以后,因为没有了专门捕鸠鸟献给老人的罗氏了,就只好取鸠鸟长寿吉祥之意,在手杖之首饰以鸠鸟,送给老人,并有授予老年王杖的制度。连云港地区曾出土的两件鸠杖,为研究汉代敬老风俗提供了详实的实物资料。本文即从鸠杖的起源、鸠杖以及汉画像石中的执杖老人、鸠杖与汉代敬老习俗这三个方面来谈谈鸠杖与汉代的敬老习俗。
