The authors studied the effects of dietary selenium and zinc on mercury toxicity and the effects of mercury on selenium and zinc metabolism. Two-factor experimental design. One factor is the presence of different mercury compounds in feeds, namely mercuric chloride, phenylmercuric acetate and methylmercury (dicyandiamide methylmercury in the seed fungicide Panogen) at mercury levels of 320, 320 and 25 ppm; another factor is to supplement selenium or zinc in the feed. In addition to the basal diet, basal diet was also used as another control with a non-methylmercury-loaded Panagen-42 carrier. Therefore, there are five treatments in total along with the three mercury compounds, each of which consists of three groups (basal diet, selenium or zinc supplementation group), each designed into 15 experimental groups. The weaned male rats weighing 56 grams on average were used as experimental animals, with 10 rats in each group and kept for 4 weeks. All three mercury compounds decreased the growth rate in rats
