The U.S. Air Force Defense Support Satellite (DSP) satellite provides early detection and early warning of missile launches and nuclear explosions to U.S. state command agencies and combatant headquarters. The satellites revolve around Earth on geostationary orbits about 35.78 kilometers above the equator, using infrared sensors to detect heat from Earth-backed missiles and boost plumes. The improvement plan enables DSPs to provide accurate and reliable data in response to evolving missile threats. The increase of mid-wave infrared detection capability has improved the practicability of the missile alarm mission. Today, 31 DSP satellites are in space.
