《嘉莉妹妹》是美国作家西奥多·德莱赛的一部极具深刻思想内涵和艺术感的长篇小说。马克思主义批评者认为,在资本主义社会中,一切都可能成为商品。小说中人与人的交往都刻上了金钱与物质的烙印,嘉莉与杜洛埃以及赫斯特伍德的交往更是商品交换的利益关系。小说不仅呈现了当时物欲横流的美国的真实图景,而且揭露了资本主义制度下的美国社会商品化的本质以及在金钱交易外衣下,人与人之间关系的异化与冷漠。本文将从马克思主义视角来剖析《嘉莉妹妹》的主题意蕴,重现当时美国的社会生活和精神面貌,揭示资本主义美国社会的商品化以及人与人关系的异化,旨在唤起当今时代的人们对自我生存价值和社会关系的思考和探索。
“Sister Carrie” is a novel full of profound ideological content and artistic feeling by the American writer Theodore Dresser. Marxist critics believe that everything can be a commodity in a capitalist society. The interaction of people in the novel is engraved with the money and the substance. Carrie’s contact with Drouet and Hurstwood is the interest of commodity exchange. The novel not only presents the true picture of the materialistic American at that time, but also exposes the essence of the commercialization of the American society under the capitalist system and the alienation and indifference of the relationship among people under the money trading coat.
