[Report of the Swiss Association for Atomic Energy, 3rd Issue, 1990, p. 6] Since 1979, West Germany has been developing methods, techniques and equipment for direct final storage of spent fuel elements without post-treatment. In the context of the disposal policy implemented by the Federal Government of West Germany, direct final storage is complementary to the disposal policy that is prioritized for subsequent treatment. According to the West German Atomic Energy Act, direct final storage may be considered for spent fuel components that are technically impossible or not economically worthwhile.
