Objective To investigate the expression of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in esophageal carcinoma and its relationship with the efficacy of concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Methods Immunohistochemical SP method was used to detect the expression of COX-2 and VEGF in 79 cases of esophageal cancer and 12 cases of normal mucosa. Follow-up for 4 years, retrospective analysis of concurrent chemoradiation. Results The positive rates of COX-2 and VEGF in esophageal cancer group were 62.0% and 64.6%, respectively, which were higher than those in normal mucosa group (16.7% and 0%, respectively). Chemotherapy of COX-2 and VEGF-positive patients had lower efficacy (P <0.05). Cox regression multivariate analysis showed that the age, TNM stage, expression of COX-2 and VEGF in esophageal cancer were independent prognostic factors. Conclusions The high expression of COX-2 and VEGF is associated with the occurrence of esophageal cancer. COX-2 and VEGF may be helpful to predict the sensitivity of concurrent chemoradiotherapy in patients with esophageal cancer.
