Introduction The content of organic matter in water is an important indicator of water quality and is often expressed as total organic carbon (TOC). The measurement method has been reported in many cases. This article describes a new analysis process: the organic matter in water is firstly directly cracked and hydrogenated to methane on the nickel catalyst, and the total carbon (the sum of organic carbon and inorganic carbon) in the water sample is measured by a hydrogen flame ionization detector. The water sample was then passed through a quartz wool layer containing phosphoric acid at 150 ° C to decompose the carbonate into carbon dioxide and reduce it to methane over a nickel catalyst. The inorganic carbon was determined by the above method and the total organic carbon was obtained from the difference between the two.
