The FLOMET process is a binder-to-process hybrid technology that uses finely divided, solid organic binders to bind fine graphite powders, metal additives, and lubricant particles to coarser iron particles. The main benefit of binder-treated mixes compared to conventional blends is better fluidity, increased productivity and part consistency, and reduced dusting and segregation. These characteristics make the binder-treated powder suitable for the production of high-performance powder metallurgy products, as well as other fine powders for various applications requiring excellent filling properties. QMP proposed a series of binder-treated mixes in the mid-1990s. Since then, there has been an ongoing effort to improve the performance of such mixes and to develop adhesives that can be used for specific applications - to process mixes. This article reviews the physical properties of binder-treated materials, the properties of green and sintered bodies. Special attention is paid to the production process characteristics of these materials.
