The world total tobacco production in 1984 was forecast at 5,900,000 tonnes, slightly lower than the previous year and 14 per cent below the 6,900,000 tonnes produced in 1982. The world tobacco plantation area of 4,100,000 hectares, forecast 3% lower than the previous year. The harvest of flue-cured tobacco and light-colored tobacco in 1984 is expected to decline. The forecast for the production of aromatic tobacco is slightly lower than the 948,387 tonnes estimated for the previous year and the forecast for darker air / sunburn is nearly 5% lower than the previous year. Due to the expected sharp increase in the production of burley tobacco in the United States, the world’s burley was projected at 723,000 tons in 1984, up 12% from the previous year. Dark-smoky tobacco is up 10% from the previous season’s forecast as more tobacco is planted in the United States, Poland and Malawi. China, the world’s largest tobacco-producing country, is expected to produce the same amount of tobacco as 1,400,000 tons in the previous year. Restricted acreage will continue to avoid a lot of surplus. Chinese officials will also continue to stress improving tobacco quality. On the other hand, U.S. tobacco is expected to produce 15% more than the previous year’s total output. The increase in production in Indonesia, Greece, Zimbabwe, Yugoslavia, Argentina and South Africa will compensate for the planned cuts in India, Brazil, the Soviet Union, Japan, South Korea and Thailand.
