最早的歌剧产生于十六世纪末意大利的弗罗伦萨,当时有几位爱好研究古代艺术的朋友常在弗罗伦萨一个艺术爱好者巴尔弟(Bardi)伯爵家里,后来又在柯尔西(Jacopo Corsi)家里聚会。主要成员有:诗人里努契尼(Ottavio Rinuccini1562—1621)、歌唱家兼作曲家培里(Jacopo Peri 1561—1633)、卡契尼(Giulio Caccini 1545—1618)等人。他们崇尚古希腊文化,以古希腊的悲剧做为他们的典范;崇尚柏拉图的精神,以柏拉图的美学观点做为他们的理论基础。他们最早
