Every student needs a place to study. Some students like to study in the quiet atmosphere (氛围) of a library. Most school libraries have large study tables with many chairs. They also have a lot of carrels (带书架阅览桌). A carrel is a small table with “walls” around three sides. A carrel is for one person, so there is only one chair at each carrel. Other students prefer to study in their own rooms at home or in the dormitory. In their rooms, these students have a desk, some bookshelves, and perhaps a study lamp to provide good lighting. All students need comfortable chairs because they spend many hours sitting at their desks.
Students have different ideas about the best atmosphere for studying. Some students prefer one kind of lighting, one kind of table or desk, and one kind of chair. Other students prefer a different kind of lighting and furniture. Some students listen to music or study in groups. Other students need to be alone in a quiet room. In other words, there is not one best atmosphere for studying. There is a “best” atmosphere for each individual student.

Each year several thousand people are killed on the road in Great Britain. Every year between one and two hundred thousand people are injured (伤害), or killed in road accidents.
If you are in England and if you listen to the eight o’clock news from BBC, you will often hear news of road accidents. You may hear something like this “On last Monday evening, at about twenty minutes to ten, a cyclist was knocked down by a truck at crossing of Oak Road and High Street in Croydon. The cyclist has died from his injuries. Anyone who saw the accident please communicate (联系) with New Scotland Yard, telephone number Whitehall one, two, one, two.”
Accidents are often caused (引起) by carelessness. If everybody obeys the rules, the roads will be much safer. How can we make the road safer?
In Great Britain traffic keeps on to the left. Motorcars, trucks, buses and cyclists must all keep to the left side of the road. In most other countries traffic keeps to the right.
Before crossing the road, stop and look both ways. Look right, look left again. Then, if you are sure that the road is clear, that there is nothing coming, it is safe to cross the road. If you see small children, very old people, or blind people, waiting to cross the road, it is a kind act to help them to cross the road in safety.
We must teach young children to cross the road safely. We must always give them a good example. Small children mustn’t play in the street.

A. Several thousand people.

C. only trucks must be driven along the left side of the road
