21世纪是人类开发利用海洋的世纪。深海海域作为人类最后一片未开发区域,蕴藏着丰富的资源,成为世界各国争取海洋权益、发展高新技术、开展国际合作及展示自身实力的重要场所。在海底矿床研究方面处于世界领先地位的加拿大多伦多大学地质学家史蒂文·斯考特认为,人类正在迎接深海采矿时代的到来。他说,人类在海洋地质学和深海技术方面取得的进展,将使2000米以下海底采金或开采其它稀有资源成为现实。 The 21st century is a century in which mankind exploits and uses the sea. As the last untapped region of mankind, deep-sea areas contain abundant resources and become an important place for countries in the world to strive for maritime rights and interests, develop high and new technologies, carry out international cooperation and demonstrate their own strength. Steven Scott, a geologist at the University of Toronto in Canada who is a world leader in seabed deposits research, believes that mankind is embracing the era of deep-sea mining. He said that the progress made by human beings in marine geology and deep sea technologies will make it possible to mine gold below the sea floor of 2000 meters or to exploit other scarce resources.
