During the Winter Games held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, an optical fiber video system was used to monitor the Olympic ski team. The entire track can be observed through the network of 37 video cameras located along the line. The staff of the Olympic Committee’s track and field security agency use fiber optic systems to ensure that each contestant safely completes his race and leaves the runway before the other athlete starts to skid. A 30-km cable was used to connect the camera on the runway to a high-tech surveillance room provided by Fital, Carrollton, Georgia. The Canadian Ministry of Municipal Engineering, as the competent authority, decided to use fiber optics because this technology represents the cutting edge of communications technology and because fiber optics can withstand the Olympic Park.
